Artificial Color Banned In Other Countries Allowed By FDA For Use In Dog Food
In what may be a precurser to possible lawsuits in the future, research has shown that dogs do not see colors the same as their human counterparts and the main reason that dog food is colorful is to attract the canine owner. This has been successful in promoting many brands of dog foods into billion dollar industries. The problem is that with coloring agents, while some are harmful there is enough evidence that the color described as Brilliant Blue FCF is made from derivatives of coal tar and has been banned in most countries. There is significant proof that Blue 2 as it is known by causes cancer in lab testing, it also can be a part of indigo paste which has aniline and formaldehyde in it. All in all, i think it is fair to say that this is not really stuff that we want. All in all, I think it is fair to say that this not stuff you want to put in dog food overall and I think we could see lawsuits in the near future as research may connect cancer in dogs to the artificial colerings. Premium dog food do not usually have these additives.
The FDA while other countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and others have ban the use of this color has been stated by the FDA as having a reasonable certainty of causing no harm.
